Ιoannis Liritzis is professor of Archaeometry and Director (and Founder ) of Archaeometry Laboratory of the Department of Mediterranean Studies, University of the Aegean, Rhodes.

He holds a Degree in Physics, University of Patras, and a PhD in Physics from the University of Edinburgh. MSc in Nuclear Instrumentation, 1976 - Specialization and Accreditation to Ionizing Radiation, 1979. Head of the Department of Mediterranean Studies (2004-2006). Specializing in the field of Natural Sciences in Archaeology and Cultural Heritage, although during his career has done research in a number of interdisciplinary fields which have been published in international scientific journals. Previous jobs include: Ministry of Culture, Department of Underwater Antiquities (1984-1989), and the Academy of Athens, Research Center for Astronomy and Applied Mathematics ( 1989-1999 ). Post-doc at the University of Edinburgh, University of Oxford, Atomic Energy Research Establishment Harwell, Academy of Athens, University of Bordeaux III, France, and University of Patras, Greece.Administrative positions include: Head of the Department, Director of Laboratories, State Administrative Bodies at the Universities of the Aegean, Peloponnese, Central Greece, a member of National Accreditation Center, National Expert in FP7 of the European Union under the Cooperation Programme.

The research and educational activities focused on the interdisciplinary field of Physics and Archaeology. .

He is Corresponding Member of the Academy of Sciences of Dijon, France and member of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts, Salzburg, Honorary & Guest Professor Samara State Institute of Culture, Russia, Honorary Professor at Samara Institute of Higher School of Privatization & Enterprise, Russia, Member of International Scientific Advisory Council of the Intern. School of Advanced Research in Cultural Studies, Russsia. Invited professor at the University of Bordeaux III, Cairo University, Sohag and Beni Suef at Egypt, Tennessee, Edinburgh, and at Peking University, Coastal Carolina University, California San Diego and other Institutes. He has been honored with 14 awards / distinctions (2012-13 ).

He has written 9 books (4 in English), more than 250 papers in international journals mostly single author or co- author of 21 mainly international volumes.

His publications and research activities refer to the Archaeological Sciences - Archaeometry (in almost all areas of this interdisciplinary topic), nuclear physics and chemistry, geophysics, paleoclimatology, astronomy (solar activity and planets,

solar - terrestrial interactions, aurorae), and ancient history astronomy .

The book Archeometric dating methods in archeology, Institute de Livre- Kardamitsa Press, Athens, 1986, has received praise from the Academy of Athens (1988) and with the overall national and international contributions in archaeometry he has been awarded the Medal of Excellence from the Greek Ministry of Education (2012-13).

Among the pioneering works is new dating methods monuments with luminescence, obsidian hydration and metals. He serves as a Member of the Editorial Board or Editor / Editor in Chief of 20 international journals (www.maajournal.com; http://www.sci-cult.com/files/). He has organized dozens of International Workshops/ Conferences and has edited Proccedings in international journals.
